Donald Trump Wins 2024 US Election

Donald Trump has won the US Election and will make a historic return to the White House.

A handful of results are yet to be counted, but Trump has won 279 Electoral College votes - surpassing the 270 mark to win - while Harris trails behind on 223.

Trump's success in key swing states is undoubtedly significant, with Trump claiming victory in North Carolina, Georgia, Wisconsin and, crucially, Pennsylvania.

Although the results are yet to be declared, Trump also looks on course to win in Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona - a clean sweep of the seven key swing states identified.

Kamala Harris is yet to concede or address supporters, after he campaign co-chief Cedric Richmond informed Democrat supporters last night that Harris would not be speaking.

What does a Trump presidency mean?

A major implication of a Trump presidency could be huge tariffs on Chinese imports to the US. A similar trade war played out last time Trump was in office, and threatens to damage the world economy.

Certainly, Americans could face higher prices if tariffs are slapped on Chinese goods.

For Ukraine, the situation is unclear. Whilst people perhaps expected Russia to be celebrating Trump's presidency, particularly after Harris' strong words against Putin, the Kremlin is reportedly dampened.

Trump will not want Ukraine to suffer defeat on his watch, but it is unclear whether he will ramp up US military support to Ukraine. Trump has promised to encourage Zelenskyy to make a deal with Putin, indicating a more diplomatic route. However, this could come at a loss of territory to Ukraine.

One thing's for certain: Trump will need to win over Americans who are staunchly opposed to his return to the White Office to create a united front.

Whilst an olive branch is likely out of the question, Trump will need to prove to his supporters and opponents that he can indeed make America great again.
