Russia Launches Extensive Air Assault on Ukraine; Poland Elevates Military Readiness

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia has conducted one of its most extensive air assaults on Ukraine, deploying approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones targeting critical infrastructure across multiple regions. The overnight offensive led to widespread power outages and substantial damage in cities including Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Odesa.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted over 140 aerial threats during the attack. Despite these efforts, the strikes resulted in casualties, notably in Mykolaiv, where two individuals lost their lives due to drone attacks.

In response to the proximity of the attacks to its borders, Poland heightened its defense readiness. The Polish Armed Forces activated all available resources, scrambling fighter jets and elevating the alert status of ground-based air defense and radar systems. This move underscores Poland's commitment to safeguarding its airspace amid escalating regional tensions.

The Russian offensive, characterized by the use of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones, marks a significant escalation in the conflict. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba condemned the attacks, describing them as a deliberate assault on civilians and critical infrastructure. He further criticized recent diplomatic engagements with Russia, suggesting that such dialogues have not deterred Moscow's aggressive actions.

This development highlights the ongoing volatility in the region and the potential for further escalation, particularly involving neighboring NATO member states like Poland. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, with calls for increased support to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and deter further aggression.
