Macron Calls for Stronger European Defence to Counter Putin

He highlighted Russia's aggressive actions, including violations of borders, election interference, and cyber-attacks, emphasizing that it would be "madness to stay a spectator in this world of danger."
Addressing potential shifts in U.S. foreign policy, Macron expressed the necessity for Europe to bolster its own defence mechanisms: "I want to believe that the United States will stand by us. But we have to be ready if that is not the case." He advocated for strengthening European defence and deterrence capabilities, stressing the importance of reducing reliance on external powers.

He responded to the call from Germany's forthcoming Chancellor, stating, "I have decided to open the strategic debate on the protection of our allies on the European continent through our (nuclear) deterrence." Macron also addressed economic challenges, notably criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tariff decisions as "incomprehensible both for the American economy and for ours." He indicated that while preparing an appropriate response in collaboration with European partners, efforts would continue to persuade the U.S. administration to reconsider these measures.
The Kremlin condemned Macron's speech as "extremely confrontational," accusing France of focusing on prolonging the conflict rather than seeking peace. Conversely, leaders from Poland and the Baltic nations welcomed Macron's proposal to extend France's nuclear deterrent, viewing it as a significant step toward reinforcing European security.
