Israel intensifies strikes on Gaza and Southern Lebanon

On 1 November 2024, Israel ramped up its military offensives against Gaza and southern Lebanon, resulting in substantial casualties and further heightening tensions in the region.

Israeli airstrikes targeted various sites across Gaza, leading to the deaths of at least 47 Palestinians, including women and children. The strikes hit heavily populated areas, intensifying the humanitarian crisis within the region. Medical facilities in Gaza are struggling with an influx of casualties, and critical shortages of supplies and personnel are reported. Since the resurgence of conflict in October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has reached over 43,000, with a large number of civilian casualties.

Simultaneously, Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, including areas in Beirut's southern suburbs and Baalbek. These attacks resulted in the deaths of more than 2,800 people, including civilians, and have displaced over 1.2 million residents. Lebanon’s government has condemned the attacks as breaches of sovereignty and violations of international law.

The United States has voiced concerns over the escalating violence. Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested progress was being made towards establishing a ceasefire with Hezbollah, yet highlighted the importance of Israel bolstering its humanitarian response in Gaza. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated Israel's resolve to achieve its security objectives, affirming that military operations will persist until threats from Hamas and Hezbollah are neutralised.

Fears of a broader conflict are growing as Iran-aligned groups, including Hezbollah, intensify their involvement. The humanitarian situation in both Gaza and Lebanon worsens, prompting calls from international organisations for an immediate ceasefire and the creation of safe corridors to deliver aid to impacted areas.

As the conflict deepens into its second year, prospects for a peaceful solution remain tenuous, with entrenched positions on both sides and civilians caught in the middle of the escalating violence.
