MANDALAY, Myanmar - 29 March 2025
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The quake occurred at approximately 12:50 PM local time, with its epicentre near Mandalay, the nation's second-largest city.
As of 29 March, official reports confirm at least 400 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries. In Mandalay, a large monastery collapsed during evening prayers, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 monks. Additionally, a preschool was destroyed, claiming the lives of 50 children.
The earthquake's tremors were felt across Southeast Asia, including in Bangkok, Thailand, approximately 600 miles from the epicentre. In Bangkok, a high-rise building under construction collapsed, resulting in at least 13 deaths and numerous injuries.
Rescue operations are underway, with emergency services working tirelessly to locate and assist survivors. However, efforts are being hampered by damaged infrastructure, including roads and communication networks. The Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and has appealed for international assistance.
The international community has begun to respond to Myanmar's appeal for aid. The United Nations has pledged support, and neighbouring countries, including China and India, are mobilising relief efforts. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is dispatching a team of experts to assess and address the most urgent needs.
Authorities warn of potential aftershocks in the coming days and urge residents to remain vigilant. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue.
