Ceasefire Collapses as Israel Launches Major Offensive in Gaza

TEL AVIV, Israel - 18 March 2025

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas disintegrated on Tuesday as the Israeli military initiated a large-scale aerial offensive on the Gaza Strip, resulting in over 400 fatalities, marking one of the deadliest days since the conflict began in October 2023. ​

The ceasefire, brokered in January 2025, aimed to facilitate the release of hostages and de-escalate tensions. However, negotiations stalled over disagreements regarding the terms of prisoner exchanges and the blockade of Gaza. Israel accused Hamas of violating the truce by refusing to release additional hostages, while Hamas insisted it adhered to the agreement and accused Israel of resuming aggression. ​

In the early hours of Tuesday, Israeli forces launched extensive airstrikes across Gaza, targeting what they described as militant infrastructure. The Gaza Health Ministry reported over 400 deaths, including a significant number of women and children. Hospitals, already strained due to limited supplies, were overwhelmed by the influx of casualties. ​

The renewed violence exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The destruction of critical infrastructure, including the only specialized cancer hospital, further crippled the healthcare system. Shortages of food, water, and medical supplies have been reported, with aid agencies warning of an impending catastrophe if access is not restored. ​

The escalation drew widespread international condemnation. Countries such as Turkey, Iran, South Africa, France, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt called for an immediate ceasefire and urged both parties to return to negotiations. The United Nations expressed deep concern over the civilian toll and called for the protection of non-combatants. ​

In Israel, the offensive sparked protests, particularly among families of hostages still held in Gaza. Demonstrators accused the government of abandoning diplomatic efforts that could have secured the release of their loved ones. The internal political landscape is also tense, with disputes over security appointments adding to the turmoil. ​

The collapse of the ceasefire and the ensuing military actions have plunged the region back into conflict, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The international community continues to call for restraint and a renewed commitment to peace negotiations to prevent further loss of life and humanitarian suffering.
